Museum für Asiatische Kunst

Das Museum für asiatische Kunst in Korfu ist das einzige Museum dieser Art in Griechenland. Es ist in einem imposanten neoklassizistischen Gebäude in der Nähe der Liston Promenade, Espianada Platz, im Palast von St. Michael und St. George untergebracht. Das Gebäude wurde zwischen 1819 und 1824 von den Briten erbaut und diente zunächst als Residenz der britischen Hochkommissare der Ionischen Inseln. Als die Ionischen Inseln 1864 mit dem griechischen Staat vereinigt wurden, wurde dieses Gebäude als Sommerresidenz der königlichen Familie genutzt. 1967 wurde der Palast an die Gemeinde Korfu übergeben.

Kanoni Halbinsel

Die Lage von Kanoni mit der Kirche von Panagia Vlacherna und die Mausinsel (Pontikonissi) sind die bekanntesten und fotografiertesten Spots von Korfu. Kanoni ist eigentlich ein Viertel von Korfu Stadt, nur ein paar Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum entfernt. Es hat seinen Namen von einer alten Kanone, die auf dem Gipfel des Hügels steht. Einige Stufen den Hügel hinunter gehen von Kanoni und Sie erreichen die kleine Kirche Panagia Vlacherna. Fischerboote fahren häufig von der Kirche ab und fahren zur legendären Mausinsel, nur 5 min Bootsfahrt. Der Mythologie zufolge ist diese felsige Insel das Schiff des Odysseus, das von Gott Poseidon versteinert wurde. Im Zentrum der Mausinsel befindet sich die Kirche Pantokrator aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Es ist auch sehr häufig, daß Sie ein Flugzeug sehen, das von diesem Punkt aus landet oder abhebt, da der Flughafen von Korfu direkt neben der Kirche liegt.

Achillion Palast

Der Achillion Palast liegt ideal im malerischen Dorf Gastouri. Dieses prächtige Schloss wurde 1890 exklusiv für Elisabeth (Sissy), die ehemalige Kaiserin von Österreich, erbaut. Der Palast diente der Kaiserin als Sommerresidenz. Leider starb Sissy die Kaiserin auf tragische Weise, als sie 1898 in Genf brutal ermordet wurde. Das Schloss war bis 1907 verlassen , als es von Kaiser Wilhelm II. von Deutschland gekauft wurde. Der Palast erhielt den Status eines öffentlichen Gebäudes nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

Paleokastritsa Kloster

Das Kloster von Paleokastritsa auf der nordwestlichen Seite von Korfu, gibt es eine große Klosteranlage, die der Panagia (Jungfrau Maria) von Paleokastritsa gewidmet ist. Dieses Kloster beherrscht die ganze Region. Erbaut auf einem abgelegenen Hügel, gibt es einen herrlichen Blick über die Insel und das Meer. Dieses byzantinische Kloster stammt aus dem Jahr 1228, aber der heutige Komplex, die Zellen der Mönche und der Hof stammen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Das Kloster verfügt über ein kleines kirchliches Museum mit seltenen byzantinischen Ikonen, heiligen Büchern und anderen Reliquien. Im Inneren des Klosters gibt es eine traditionelle Olivenölpresse. Der Weg zum Kloster führt durch einen Wald von Olivenbäumen und Zypressen.

aggelokastro corfu

Aggelokastro, which is also referred to as Angel Castle, is strategically located in close proximity to Krini. It is believed to date back to the 13th century. The Aggelokastro is conspicuous by its domed gate at the entrance. It boasts of priceless vestiges and there are exclusive storage rooms as well. Another interesting remnant is an ancient church dedicated to the angels Gabriel and Michael which is surprisingly constructed in a cave.

Kassiopi: The village of Kassiopi lies 38 km north of Corfu Town, opposite the Albanian coasts. This small picturesque fishing village counts 1200 inhabitants and is dominated by a Roman fortress where it is also believed that the Emperor Nero once stood near this location. Today, Kassiopi is a cosmopolitan town with several taverns, cafes, bars and accommodation.

Sidari is a popular tourist resort, 36 km north-west of Corfu Town. Surrounded by a landscape of wild beauty, Sidari has developed a lot of tourist amenities over the last years. The village is located right next to the famous Canal d’ Amour (the Channel of Love), with the unique geological formations. Canal d’ Amour is one of the most distinctive spots of Corfu and everyone should visit.
